[November 8th, 2023] — ThermAvant Technologies, a leading innovator in thermal management solutions, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract titled "Thermal Management of V-band Transmit Arrays with Oscillating Heat Pipes" under SBIR topic AF212-0004. This award, granted by the United States Air Force, signifies a pivotal step in advancing cutting-edge high-power, ultra-high frequency phased arrays for a variety of dual-use applications.

The Air Force's SBIR topic AF212-0004 challenges ThermAvant Technologies to address the unique and competing demands associated with V-band transmit arrays where extreme heat fluxes are generated from temperature-sensitive elements on each RF module, and where a plurality of modules must be compactly arrayed for effective power amplification and beam steering capabilities, This poses a variety of thermal, mechanical, electrical and RF challenges that must be addressed at multiple levels of the array.

To meet the objectives set by this SBIR topic, ThermAvant Technologies proposed the integration of Oscillating Heat Pipes (OHPs) into the V-band phased mechanical structures at the device-, module- and array-level. The OHPs to be developed during Phase II will acquire and spread high heat loads from an array of modules each housing multiple high heat flux transistors; and then reject this waste efficiently to the array’s ultimate heat sink - and do so with minimal temperature rise, size, weight or additional power tradeoffs.

Innovative OHP designs will enable next-generation high-data-rate V-band (71-76 GHz) downlinks for military and commercial satellites and in nearby frequency bands, such as W-band (81-86 GHz) uplinks.

ThermAvant Technologies is thrilled to have this opportunity to contribute to the United States Air Force's advancement of mission-critical technologies. The Company remains dedicated to creating OHP-based solutions that address the challenges presented by modern, opto-electronic and RF systems by enhancing their power density without the limitations imposed by conventional thermal-mechanical technologies.
